The troubles are not just one to cry for, nor the madness just one to bind.

These two lines of vernacular poetry depict the bewilderment of the individual confronted with the multitude of their inner world. When afflicted by a single sorrow, we possess the capacity to weep. Tears articulate that sorrow, mourn it, and discharge it. However, when tribulations accumulate, weeping alone becomes insufficient; we are left at a loss as to which sorrow to weep for. Consequently, we become incapable of crying altogether.

In psychology, this state is termed "flooding" or "freezing." Under the weight of simultaneous burdens, the nervous system either triggers an alarm and becomes dysregulated, or opts to shut down emotions and freeze. It enters a state of emotional hibernation, postponing the confrontation with unmanageable affective fluctuations until a future time. A profound silence, nourished by deferred weeping, accumulates within many who appear composed on the outside. Therefore, healing often begins by isolating these sorrows one by one: distinguishing which belongs to the present, which to the past, which is inherently mine, and which has been internalized from others. Through this differentiation, it becomes possible to mourn each sorrow individually; the collectively borne burden transforms into named and acknowledged grievances.

The verse, "There is not merely one madman that you could bind," touches upon a deeper psychological reality. We do not harbor a single "madman" within. There exist distinct fragments of the self: one that rages, one that fears, one that seeks escape, one that attempts to control everything, and one that begs for affection. As we attempt to bind, silence, or enchain them, they vociferate even louder; suppressing one causes another to shriek. Furthermore, we cannot bind all the "madmen" in the external world; the behaviors of others and the vicissitudes of life are not tethered to the rope of our volition. Maturity commences at the juncture where we accept our inability to bind them. When we learn to listen to the "madmen" within rather than restraining them, and understand what each is striving to protect, the internal multitude subsides. We cannot chain a river, but we can learn to navigate its currents. In the face of a multitude of sorrows and internal chaos, the individual's optimal recourse is not to attempt to dominate them all simultaneously, but to heed their underlying messages and learn to coexist with them. Courage, for instance, is not the absence of fear; it begins with the capacity to coexist with it.

İçimizdeki delileri bağlamak yerine onları dinlemeyi, her birinin neyi korumaya çalıştığını anlamayı öğrendiğimizde kalabalık yatışır. Nehri zincirleyemeyiz ama onunla yüzmeyi öğrenebiliriz. Dertlerin ve delilerin çokluğu karşısında insanın yapabileceği, hepsine birden hükmetmeye çalışmak değil, her birinin ne dediğine kulak vermek, onlarla birlikte yaşamayı öğrenmektir. Örneğin cesaret korkunun yokluğu değildir; korkuyla beraber yaşamayı bilmekle başlar.

Allah Yeter, kalan her şey boş hevestir.
